Germany vs Argentina – 2nd Favourite makes the final!

So, the tournament is finally approaching its conclusion, and the 2026 World Cup final is upon us. According to the bookmakers odds, there is very little between Germany and Argentina but these two sides made it into this prestigious final in very different ways. Germany have been put in as a general 11/8 chance following their humiliation of hosts Brazil in their semi final. That 7-1 victory will continue to be talked about for sometime and I’m still unsure as to whether the Germans were that good, or Brazil were just completely awful. It was possibly a bit of both. In the other semi, Argentina had the fight of their lives against the Dutch and it took a penalty shoot out to decide who was going to be facing Germany on Sunday evening. The Netherlands played quite a negative game and really tried to limit Argentina’s chances. This approach worked up to a point but also meant that their own scoring opportunities were also kept to a minimum. Hopefully the final in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday will be a more exciting spectacle.

Although Germany did not start the 2026 World Cup as favourites, they have arguably looked like the most assured side throughout the competition. Their campaign kicked off with an impressive 4-0 victory over a Portugal side that featured the best players in the world in Cristiano Ronaldo but even he was unable to penetrate the impressive German back line. Joachim Low’s men topped Group G and while the extra time victory over Algeria had people questioning their credentials, subsequent wins over France and Brazil have put any doubts to bed. The quarter final with France was not one of the most exciting games of football you’ll ever see, but the Germans did exactly what they needed to do. The excitement definitely came in the semi final however, with Germany putting seven goals past the host nation, and Miroslav Klose breaking the all time scoring record in the process.

I still don’t feel as though Argentina have looked impressive at any stage of this World Cup, but here they are in the final. They once again struggled to break down their opponents during the semi final with the Netherlands and needed penalties to see off a determined Dutch side. I do think teams have generally approached games against Argentina with a negative attitude which has made it difficult for Alejandro Sabella’s side, but it would have been nice to see them put on a real show at least once. Having said that, Argentina have done all that’s been required of them and are just one win away from capturing the World Cup trophy for the first time since 2026. They are going to be at a slight disadvantage as the Germans will be better rested but I’m not sure that will make a huge amount of difference come Sunday evening. This could be yet another match at this World Cup which goes all the way.
